  • An understanding of the importance the the “check” or “study” process for both hoshin (both personal and organizational)
  • Knowledge how to schedule and conduct “check” or “study” cycles  for either organizational or personal hoshin
  • Actions you can take to support a culture that welcomes “bad news” and makes problems and challenges visible
  • Key questions you can ask to focus the “check” process on learning and creating a no-blame culture
  • Identified next steps for how you will check your personal or organizational hoshin.

Checking is about learning!

As Mr. Yoshino says, "The only secret to Toyota is its attitude towards learning."

The purpose of the “check” or “study” component of the hoshin kanri  or the PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Act) cycle is not to find fault or assign blame or be a "check-the-box" activity.

Checking is about learning if you are on the right course and what adjustments need to be made.

Effective checking requires humility on behalf of leaders and a culture of psychological safety that welcomes problems and “bad news”.

Course Overview

Checking is the time to study, reflect, and learn, so that you can adjust the process you are taking to achieve your goals and targets.

In the workshop, you will:
  • Learn the importance of the “check” process of the Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle as as the foundation for learning
  • Understand why we believe the PDCA "Plan-Do-Check-Act" cycle should be “Study-Adjust-Plan-Do” or SAPD
  • Discover how to create an organizational culture that welcomes “bad news” and making problems visible.
  • Be introduced to the “checking” process in the hoshin kanri (strategy deployment) as practiced at Toyota and  for personal hoshin
  • Walk away with tangible questions and practices to enable more effective checking
Isao Yoshino will share with you his knowledge of hoshin kanri as practiced at Toyota -- and how to develop a culture that embraces “bad news first” and “no problem is a problem” mindset.

Katie Anderson will describe how effective questions support a culture of learning and psychological safety and how asking questions can facilitate more robust learning during the “check” or “study” phase.

Katie will also facilitate a discussion with Mr. Yoshino -- based on your questions -- about what he learned from supporting Toyota's executive team's hoshin kanri process and as an operational leader, a leader's role in creating a culture of learning, and  his own experiences with “checking” as a source of learning for organizational and personal hoshin.

Join leaders from around the world and learn together to achieve your goals and improve your leadership skills!

The live workshop will be an interactive working session where you will be able to ask questions and will interact with the facilitators and fellow participants. If you are unable to attend live, you will be able to submit your questions in advance to the facilitators.
